Ocean state, three days ahead
Wave height, sea-surface temperature and wind from the INCOIS Ocean State Forecast, at seven INCOIS wave-rider buoy stations. It's the same three-day horizon INCOIS uses for small-craft and potential fishing zone advisories. For official warnings, see INCOIS.

Numerical ocean model output and in-situ observations in one block: Argo profiling floats, INCOIS wave-rider buoys and cyclone tracks over the model's computational mesh. Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, hover to probe. Click any ocean point for its depth profile, or any Argo float to compare its measured cast with the model.

From the sunlit surface to the abyssal plain
Pick an Indian basin and descend the full water column. Temperature, salinity, pressure and oxygen update from the ocean model as you pass the thermocline into the midnight zone. A custom shader compares the model with the nearest Argo float's measured cast: wherever the model deviates beyond the threshold, that slab of the water column glows amber, then red — a quick visual read on how well the model matches the observations.

PSUOcean hazards, now and three days ahead
Cyclones and gales, oil-spill drift, marine heatwaves, low-oxygen water and algal blooms over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, from INCOIS and Copernicus Marine forecasts. Each map follows a stated rule; step through the next 72 hours, or click the map to read a point. For official warnings, see INCOIS and IMD.

Marine heatwave record
A marine heatwave is sea temperature above the 90th percentile of a 30-year baseline for five days or more — the definition of Hobday et al. (2016), with the categories of Hobday et al. (2018). Nothing in this record is forecast and nothing is scored: every figure is arithmetic on temperatures already recorded. The outlook above is the forecast.
Click the map to read the whole record at that cell.

Ocean Productivity by Basin
Surface chlorophyll-a marks where phytoplankton grow, the base of the marine food web. Values come from the Copernicus multi-sensor satellite product for the model day chosen on the 3D Ocean tab, weighted by ocean area.
Swim with them, at their depth
Descend through the water column and meet the Indian Ocean megafauna recorded in each basin, drawn at the depths they typically live: dolphins and turtles in the sunlit layer, yellowfin tuna in the mixed layer above the thermocline, blue whales feeding a few hundred metres down, sperm whales hunting squid in the dark. Click any animal for its dossier.

News, observations, events and hazards, in one feed
What the news is saying about the Indian Ocean, the official ocean alerts in force, the instruments watching it, and this platform’s own 72-hour hazard outlooks, on one map and one timeline. Every item says where it came from: official alerts are relayed as issued; news is indexed, not verified; outlooks are models, not warnings.

Interactive docsAbout TarangSetu
A browser-based 3D ocean-analysis platform that brings numerical ocean models, satellite products and real in-situ observations into one place, so the ocean can be explored across location, depth and time — with every value saying where it came from.
What each tab shows
| 3D Ocean | Model, satellite and derived fields across depth and time on the globe, with Argo floats, INCOIS wave-rider buoys, marine animal telemetry, a scrolling summary of each sea region, vertical sections, T–S diagrams and exports. |
| Forecast | INCOIS’s 72-hour Ocean State Forecast — wave height, sea temperature and wind — at seven INCOIS wave-rider buoy stations. Model forecasts, not buoy readings or advisories. |
| Model Validation | The model domain as a 3D block: model temperature or salinity at the surface and at any depth, real Argo floats (their up-and-down motion is a schematic profiling cycle), wave-rider buoys and cyclone tracks. Click a point for its model depth profile, or a float for its measured cast against the model as MAE, RMSE and bias. |
| Depth Explorer | A descent from the surface to the seafloor at four basins: the model’s full-depth temperature, salinity and oxygen, pressure derived from depth, sunlight estimated from satellite chlorophyll, GEBCO seafloor depth and relief, and the nearest Argo float’s measured cast against the model, with drifting depths glowing amber or red. |
| Wildlife Dive | A descent through four basins meeting the megafauna recorded there in OBIS (Ocean Biodiversity Information System), each drawn in its typical depth band from a cited diving or tagging study, with a dossier of its IUCN status and a summary of its OBIS records; SST and waves now from INCOIS. |
| Ocean Hazards | Cyclones and gales, oil-spill drift, marine heatwaves, low-oxygen water and algal blooms, now and 72 hours ahead, from INCOIS and Copernicus Marine forecasts by stated rules; the oil drift is a hypothetical release you choose. Below it, the marine-heatwave record (Hobday et al. 2016) on the reanalysis, and ocean productivity by basin: satellite chlorophyll-a for the model day, with the share of pixels the product gap-filled. |
| Ocean Connect | An Indian Ocean intelligence feed: news from the GDELT index, INCOIS High Wave / Swell Surge / Ocean Current alerts, INCOIS ITEWC tsunami bulletins and NDMA SACHET coastal alerts as issued, the INCOIS observing networks and Argo floats on a map, and the Ocean Hazards tab’s outlooks, on one timeline. |
| API | Every endpoint the app uses, read live from the running backend. |
